The City relies on a number of public and private entities to ensure weeds and vegetation issues are handled appropriately. The responsible party depends on where the weeds are located.
Private Property | Per the California Fire Code, weeds located on private property are always the responsibility of the property owner to address. If the property has a structure or dwelling unit on it, weed issues are enforced by the Fire Department’s Wildland Management and Enforcement Section. If it is a privately owned vacant lot, weed issues are enforced by the Fire-Rescue Department’s private contractor Fire Prevention Services, Inc. | Parks and Open Space | Weeds located in City parks and open space, including park facilities and structures, are addressed by the Parks & Recreation Department. | Streets, Sidewalks, and other areas in the paved right of way | Weeds located in the public right-of-way, including streets and sidewalks, are addressed by the Transportation Department. If the vegetation is located in a storm drain, it is handled by Stormwater Department. |
